Ten years after Kästrich: Circuit-Art

Almost ten years after "Kästrich" which existed from 1990 until 2000 as an independent forum for art in Mainz, Circuit-Art is founded as an independent platform that traces developments in art through publications. As a non-profit framework Circuit-Art emphasizes those segments in art that are not represented within the art historic or art market approach on art. In this way, Circuit-Art may work as an information link between artists and a small public.

Kästrich – an independent forum for art. With a report on independent art circuits.

Cover Kästrich

The book is a retrospective about the ten year independent forum for art "Kästrich" that was founded 1990 in Mainz. It is a complete documentation with more than 350 images and texts about the more than 30 exhibitions, installations, sound installations, performances and other activities. More than 70 national and international artists have participated in the program. Aside from this documentation, the book contains a report on "Independet Art Circuits" – independent platforms that were founded and directed by artists which, since the late 1960's were influential on the development of art. The report features articles of Phill Niblock & Arthur Stidfole (Experimental Intermedia Foundation, New York), Rolf Langebartels (Giannozzo, Berlin), Paul Panhuysen (Het Apollohuis, Eindhoven) and a conversation of Roland Siegrist and Harald Kubiczak about the Halle (Mainz) and the mentioned institutions. Some interconnections between these four initiatives are traced with examples. More…

In preparation: Music without Musicians

Paul Panhuysen had been invited as a guest curator by the former contemporary music venue De IJsbreker in Amsterdam to assemble a program of six sound installations to be exhibited there during the summer months of 1997. This book is a documentary in words, images and sound of the series. Starting from the programmatic title, the subject of absence of musicians in the making of music and the development of autonomous mechanical soundinstallations and soundsculptures is discussed. The book will be accompanied by a CD with sound recordings of the works presented. Texts from Kitty Zijlmans (Leiden University) and Leon van Noorden (Ghent University). Artists: Pierre Bastien, Ad van Buuren, Ulrich Eller, Harald Kubiczak, Frédéric Le Junter, Trimpin. Publication date: May/June 2012. The book may already be ordered for a reduced subscription price…

Independent Art Circuits

Starting in the late 1960’s artists founded own independent platforms aside from the traditional art institutions. In this way, a new branch in art appeared that is marked by strength of content, interdisciplinary work, new media of expression, formation of own networks and the refusal of commercial motives. With a separation from traditional academic, art historical and mercantile mechanisms in the production and public presentation of art, artists have managed to form own networks –independent art circuits.
